A potentiostat galvanostat enables the measurement of electrical currents of positive and negative polarity. It aims at regulating the voltage of an electrode by means of a reference electrode. Its main purpose is to maintain a sufficiently constant electrical current to be able to evaluate the electrical potential of an electrochemical cell.

Potentiostats can be connected to numerous elements for multiple use, for an application in fundamental research as well as for the study of materials.
