Enhanced Method for Determination of Inorganic Cations and Ammonia in Drinking and Natural Waters

Sykam introduces a new ion chromatography method that ensures higher accuracy in determining inorganic cations and ammonia in drinking and natural waters, fully compliant with ASTM D6919 and EN ISO 14911 standards.

This new Application from Sykam GmbH presents an optimized method for determining inorganic cations and ammonia using ion chromatography (IC) with direct conductivity measurement. This method reduces peak tailing, improves resolution, and enhances sensitivity—making water analysis more precise and cost-effective compared to previous methods.
Monitoring drinking water and natural water quality is crucial to prevent risks from industrial and anthropogenic pollution. Essential cations such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and ammonium are vital parameters for water quality assessment.

Applications:

  • Drinking water quality monitoring
  • Analysis of commercial mineral waters
  • River and lake water testing
  • Environmental compliance monitoring
  • Equipment and Reagents:
  • The Sykam C07 column with the S152 IC system
  • Methanesulfonic acid as eluent to reduce interferences and improve peak resolution
  • Direct conductivity detection without the need for suppressors
  • Results and Key Benefits:
  • Baseline separation and high resolution for all standard cations (Li, Na, NH4, K, Mg, Ca)
  • Improved sensitivity for ammonium in presence of sodium
  • Lower method detection limits (MDL) compared to previous AN05 method
  • Broader calibration range for reliable quantification
  • High reproducibility and precision demonstrated on real water samples
